“In December 2007 the BBC launched its online streaming and download service, the iPlayer. By the end of 2009, over 729 million requests to view programs had been made via the service.

“Similarly, in the United States services like Hulu present television along with film under the simple banner, “Watch your favourites. Any time. For free.”

The iPlayer and Hulu provide an experience that promises the freedom to decide what to watch and when to watch it and, in so doing, fragment the previously mass audience of television into a series of personalized choices.
